Car insurance shopping for women

Foxy lady drivers compare notes about the best insurance deals for women, know to shop around regularly for the best insurance deals and always read the small print carefully.

Despite the hype, there is no evidence that any insurer offering car insurance for women is either cheaper or better than one that advertises to men or women alike. They simply adjust their premium to suit the risk you represent based on your car, postcode, experience and claims history. In general young women drivers are a better insurance risk than young men, by the time we are in our 30s and 40s both genders represent a similar risk and, allegedly, older women have more bumps in supermarket car parks and when parking so they don't always do as well as men here.

Most women drivers start insurance shopping a month ahead of renewal time at comparison shopping websites like www.moneysupermarket.com, www.confused.com, www.gocompare.com and www.tescocompare.com.

  • Beware of small print excesses which make insurance premiums look low for women drivers. If they deter you from claiming, you are carrying the insurance risk not the insurer.
  • Find out if your local authority subsidises the PassPlus driving course for novice drivers; the list of insurers offering discounts is growing.
  • Declare annual mileage of less than 5000 - this makes you a better risk than someone driving a lot more than this and will reduce your premium.
  • If you own and drive more than one car get a quote for a multiple vehicle policy as you can't be driving both cars at the same time. A declared low annual mileage per vehicle will reduce the risk and the insurance premium.
  • If you have a full or more than 4 years No Claims Bonus (NCB) you should get a 75% discount; if not, keep shopping.
  • Members of FOXY get a free motor accident legal assistance service including female-friendly claims advice and expenses up to £50,000. Don't pay extra for this elsewhere.

Needless to say, foxy ladies know to tell the truth and declare speed and traffic convictions so there are no complications when the cover is needed.

Finally bogus (and inflated) claims are costing honest policyholders more than £1.6 billion a year, adding as much as 5% to all premiums. If you know of an insurance claim that isn't genuine you are now able to report this to the Insurance Fraud Bureau's Cheat Line on 0800 328 2550.
