British drivers 'are safest in Europe'
Women drivers may welcome the results of research which suggest British motorists are the safest in Europe.
According to a road behaviour survey by Swiftcover's parent company Axa, 92 per cent of people in the UK feel safe on their country's roads, versus a European average of 72 per cent.
Some 41 per cent of British motorists also believe there is strict law enforcement when it comes to driving offences in the UK, in comparison to a 37 per cent average across the rest of the continent.
Britain has the second lowest road fatality rates in Europe with 5.4 people per 10,000 being killed on the roads.
Of the UK motorists questioned, 92 per cent thought answering a mobile phone without a hands-free set was dangerous, compared to 85 per cent of respondents from the rest of Europe.
Similarly, 92 per cent viewed drink-driving as unacceptable, against 85 per cent of other European motorists.
Tina Shortle from Swiftcover said: "It is clear that British drivers put safety higher up on the agenda when driving compared to their European neighbours."
Previous research by the insurer found 12 per cent of Brits find driving to work the most stressful regular journey they make.
