Car insurance policy changes 'proving pricy' for female drivers 28 March 08
Female drivers are among the 14 million motorists in Britain that pay additional fees on their car insurance every year, according to the latest research.
Website uSwitch.com has found that Britain's motorists pay a total of £333 million in fees each year, for things such as changing details on policies or requesting duplicate documents.
Since the insurance code governing such charges - section 2.10 of the Insurance Code of Business - was removed from the replacement Insurance Code of Business Sourcebook, uSwitch claims there is no regulation to curb such charges for female motorists and other road users.
"Without any regulation existing in the market around fees, the insurance industry can charge what they like. It is vital that consumers are made aware of these fees and that the insurance industry is made to review and justify their validity," said Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at the firm.
The price for cancelling car insurance for females and other motor insurance policies mid-term can currently be "unlimited", according to Mr Berkhauer.
Earlier this week, car insurance for women provider Sheila's Wheels said that females were statistically safer drivers than men.
