Cash for bangers launched
Female motorists desperate to trade in their old banger for a brand new model can take part in the government's vehicle scrappage scheme from today.
Some £300 million has been set aside to help drivers update to safer, greener and more fuel-efficient models.
People who own a vehicle that is more than ten years old will be offered £2,000 off the price of a new car.
The government claimed drivers would be spoilt for choice as 38 manufacturers have thrown their weight behind the initiative.
Peter Mandelson predicted the programme would be a big success.
"The scheme has been met with a flood of enquiries from customers," he stated.
"It will provide a boost to the industry and kick-start sales."
Mr Mandelson also said he was delighted with the support provided by the auto sector.
Women who do not qualify for the scheme because their vehicle is not old enough may find regular car servicing can help keep their current motor on the road for a few more years.
