With the credit crunch showing no signs of loosening its grip, there may be a rise in a type of car insurance fraud known as fronting, esure has claimed.

This practice occurs when a parent insures a vehicle which is primarily, or solely, used by a son or daughter in order to obtain cheaper premiums.

A fronted policy sees the experienced motorist persuade the insurer they are the main driver and the car is based at their home when this is not the case.

Mike Pickard from esure said: "If detected, insurers could treat the policy as invalid."

He added: "Honesty is the best policy when it comes to car insurance."

Young female motorists who want access to the best deals on insurance for women drivers need to start off by getting a cheap, low power vehicle in their own name for a few years and start building up their no claims discount, esure advised.

Earlier this year, esure reported more than 26 million road users in the UK use headlights incorrectly.
