'Change to law needed' to keep down cost of EU drivers in UK
25 April 08

There have been calls for the law to be changed to protect British motorists after a report has estimated that the number of EU drivers in the UK will cost the economy £795 million in 2008.

The report, commissioned by LV=, shows that the number of EU nationals driving in the UK has risen by 50 per cent from 534,000 in 2001 to 804,000 in 2007.

This has the potential to impact both male and female motorists as the cost of insurance claims, number of accidents and congestion are all on the increase.

John O'Roarke, managing director of LV=, said: "The insurance industry is already feeling the effects of the increasing numbers of EU drivers on British roads through rising claims costs. There is already legislation planned but this needs to be brought forward to help alleviate the issues."

He added that the situation could "potentially impact insurance premiums" while the additional expense of emergency services and road maintenance may be handed to UK taxpayers, including women drivers.

The EU expanded in 2004 to include countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania and Latvia within the member states.
