If they had a spare £1,200, how many female shoppers would spend it on a 27-year-old slice of cake?

Probably not many – but this is how much an old piece of wedding cake sold for at auction this week.

However, this was not just a slice of any old wedding cake. It was a piece of the royal wedding cake from Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding.

When the couple wed, members of the royal household were each given a piece of the cake. One employee, Moyra Smith, kept hers and when she died her husband put it up for auction.

The female friendly spectacle of Charles and Diana's wedding took place in 1981.

According to BBC archives, approximately 600,000 well-wishers greeted the newlyweds as they emerged from St Paul's Cathedral, while millions of other Britons were able to watch the ceremony on TV, as the day was declared a national holiday.
