Male and female motorists have been advised to check their car insurance policy before heading overseas in their cars this summer.

Comparison site moneysupermarket.com has said that around four in ten drivers (39 per cent) are unaware that their car insurance policy may be automatically downgraded from fully comprehensive to third party when they take their vehicle overseas.

"Drivers really need to be alert to this trick of the trade," said Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com.

"A crash is a horrible experience, but being abroad, not speaking the local dialect, and finding yourself uninsured, could turn your idyllic break into a holiday from hell."

According to the research, female motorists with five of the leading ten insurance providers could be among those who find themselves downgraded when it comes to driving overseas.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists recently issued some guidance for motorists about driving abroad, warning motorists of slipping into "holiday mode" when at the wheel.
