It is the female friendly news all women have been waiting for – chocolate can save your life.

A study by American and Italian researchers has found patients with raised blood pressure who indulged in one 100 gram bar of chocolate a day for two weeks saw their health improve significantly.

However, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has said chocolate alone cannot help you live longer.

Cardiac nurse with BHF Ellen Mason stated: "Chocolate is more often part of the problem for heart health rather than the solution."

She claimed people who were keen to stay healthy should adopt a diet which incorporated five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Ms Mason added that kind of diet was a much better way to get the antioxidants that protect the heart without having to worry about the high levels of sugar and fat in chocolate.

The online medical journal Nutrition and Metabolism states chocolate has been used as a medicinal remedy since ancient times.
