Drivers caught on the phone 'face bigger premiums' 18 June 08
Drivers caught using their mobile phones at the wheel now face insurance premium increases of up to 30 per cent.
The Daily Mail reports many big-name cover companies now ask motorists if they have a conviction for using a mobile while driving when working out quotes.
Allianz adds 30 per cent to premiums, according to the paper, meaning the average motorist convicted of using a handset while at the wheel would face an extra £204 a year with the firm.
Quoted by the Daily Mail, AA spokesman Ian Crowder said: "In our experience, drivers who have been convicted of using their phones tend to pick up more claims and are therefore deemed to be more dangerous."
Even women drivers with a female friendly car insurance policy are likely to find their premiums rise after such a conviction.
Male and female drivers caught using a mobile while driving also face points on their licences and hefty fines.
It first became illegal to use a handset at the wheel in 2003, with the minimum fine now standing at £60.
