Drivers playing 'roadside roulette'

Female motorists who do not get breakdown cover in a bid to save costs in the current economic climate are playing "roadside roulette", it has been claimed.

According to the AA, more than £120 million was lost in the past year by drivers without a policy who ended up stranded after their car let them down.

The group claimed two million people broke down without any form of roadside assistance cover, with many being forced to shell out more than three times the price of basic protection for emergency one-off garage assistance.

A national survey revealed on average motorists without cover paid £90 simply to get a mechanic to come out and look at their vehicle.

Commenting on the findings, AA patrol of the year Andy Taylor said: "It might seem tempting to save a few quid now and gamble that your car will carry you through the downturn without crunching to a halt."

However, he added driving without breakdown cover is like "roadside roulette".

In other news, the AA recently reported whiplash injury claims add £66 to every UK car insurance policy.
