Honest women drivers should benefit from the fact the number of people driving without car insurance has fallen, it has been suggested.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said there are a number of reasons why law-abiding motorists should welcome this news.

Firstly, it pointed out, uninsured drivers cost other road users money.

According to the Motor Insurers' Bureau, people who get behind the wheel without car insurance add £30 a year to the premiums of other vehicle owners.

Meanwhile, ABI claimed, as well as leaving people out of pocket, motorists without cover are more dangerous than other motorists.

Spokesperson Malcolm Tarling stated: "Uninsured drivers ... are much more likely to be involved in an accident and are much more likely to be convicted of drink driving."

These comments were made after a police and government operation revealed the proportion of people driving without car insurance has fallen from 1.9 per cent to 1.2 per cent since 2006.
