Female motorists who are keen to go for an environmentally-friendly option when they trade in their current vehicle may be tempted by the Toyota iQ, after it was named Japanese car of the year 2008.

The car, which has CO2 emissions of 99 g/km, beat off competitors like the Jaguar XF, Audi A4 and Citroen C5, receiving more than double the points of the second-placed model.

Qualities the judges were particularly impressed with were design and good use of space.

The vehicle will not get the opportunity to claim the European car of the year title for 2008, as it does not arrive in showrooms until January 6th 2009 - after the cut off date for entries.

When the model does go on sale, women drivers will be able to get their hands on one for upwards of £9,495.

The entry-level version will feature 15-inch alloys air conditioning and heated electrically-adjustable door mirrors.
