New advice from the EU on how to drive efficiently could see some female motorists save hundreds of pounds in fuel costs.

The EU executive is running an 'Eco Driving' campaign, encouraging drivers to use simple techniques to cut fuel use.

A video released on the authority's YouTube website, 'EUTube', demonstrates how over the space of a year the methods could lead to big savings.

Advice on the video says: "The name of the game when it comes to consuming less is to reach your cruising speed fairly quickly and then to use the highest gear possible."

Other tips that may benefit female drivers include making sure a car's tyre pressures are correct and using air conditioning systems less.

Judging traffic flow in order to reduce the frequency of pressing the accelerator is also advised by the clip.

The UK government is also aiming to help people reduce household emissions through an 'Act on CO2' campaign, which involves an online CO2 calculator.
