Women drivers who are keen to avoid making a claim on their car insurance need to keep an eye out for cat burglars, AA Insurance warns.

The group claims thieves are increasingly targeting the catalytic converters of parked cars.

Catalytic converters fetch about £60 for thieves as they contain precious metals.

AA Insurance claims thieves are also stealing fuel from cars as the price of petrol and diesel continues to rise.

It adds extensive damage is often caused in the process.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "Thieves work quickly and carelessly, sometimes causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage."

Female motorists who are concerned about being targeted should park in a well-lit area, consider fitting a security device which detects any movement of a vehicle and think about setting up a neighbourhood watch scheme, the AA advises.

Elsewhere, the Association of British Insurers claims car insurance is getting more expensive due to the rising number of personal injury claims.
