Female motorists may be choosing to pick up new cars with diesel engines fitted after new statistics show a rise in the level of interest in such vehicles.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures revealed that an increase of 7.3 per cent in diesel models has been documented over the course of the year.

It added that last month, demand for alternatively-fuelled models in Britain went up, with 1,479 cars sold.

This follows on from news that Hollywood film star and foxy lady driver Cameron Diaz has recently been spotted driving an eco-friendly Toyota Prius.

Drivers who go for such models could find that they pick up cheaper car insurance policies from female-friendly cover companies that reward those who try to reduce their carbon footprint.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt remarked that the motor industry "needs the support of the government in order to encourage the uptake of lower-emitting vehicles".
