Female drivers who are fans of the Smart fortwo may this week wish it a happy birthday, as the model celebrates ten years in production.

The vehicle has been picked up by over 900,000 motorists across 37 countries since it first rolled out of a factory in Hambach, France.

Since then, it has developed into a safe two-passenger vehicle with fuel efficiency described by Dr Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management at owners Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz cars, as "exemplary".

Indeed, it may be that by switching to a Smart model, motorists save on their female drivers' car insurance policies, should cover companies see them as representative of an increased risk.

He said: "The Smart fortwo is a clever solution and fun to drive. Had we not invented it ten years ago, we would have to do so now."

This comes as Daimler has announced that it will be fitting Smart fortwo vehicles with a micro-hybrid start-stop system from October.
