FOXY Archive Higher tax 'not the complete solution'
Increasing taxes alone will not prompt male and female drivers to choose hybrid or electric cars, according to one organisation.
The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said the government's target of ensuring all British motorists drive such vehicles by 2020 cannot be realised through "punitive" taxes.
According to the organisation, many drivers find electric or hybrid cars to be "expensive and impractical" options, despite recent increases in fuel and road tax.
"Many government ministers already have the use of a Toyota Prius hybrid car, but at almost £18,000 this type of car is out of reach for most people - high motoring taxes cannot cajole every British driver into an electric car if the market is not ready," a spokesperson for the ETA commented.
An additional problem the association found with the target is the lack of spare capacity within the National Grid needed to enable more people to choose electric cars, foxy lady drivers may be interested to know.
The ETA was founded in 1990 and organised the first Green Transport Week in 1992.
