Government plans which could see the number of car insurance claims in the UK fall have been welcomed by one road safety charity.

Brake has stated proposals to toughen the penalties for people who speed or get behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs should help to cut the number of fatalities on Britain's roads.

However, it added it was opposed to any reduction in the number of points for people caught travelling only a few miles an hour over the limit.

Brake's chief executive, Mary Williams, said: "Speeding kills, maims and devastates families and communities - and only a few miles over a limit can be the difference between life and death."

The group also pointed out the proposed measures would only work if the authorities were strict about enforcing new tougher penalties.

In other news, Brake recently called for more 20 mph zones to be introduced across the UK.
