Foxy female drivers with one eye on the environment may have to forget living in electric dreams for the time being and choose a hybrid vehicle.

According to Clean Green Cars (CGC), 71 per cent of people would like to make use of an electric vehicle in the future, but today hybrid cars represent their best chance of going green on the road.

Once they do plug in, women drivers could find that they gain cheaper car insurance for being environmentally-friendly on top of the female-friendly benefits offered by cover firms.

"The only prospect for the next five years for making significant improvements is the next generation of plug-in hybrids, which should appear from about 2010," said CGC spokesperson Jay Nagley.

This follows research from newcarnet.co.uk which found that London residents are the least likely to go for alternative fuel technology.
