Did know that at night your eyes can only pick up about one-tenth of what they can see in daylight?

According to GEM Motoring Assist, this means that driving in the dark could be rather perilous if you don't pay much greater attention to safety.

The company, which was previously known as the Guild of Experienced Motorists, took the opportunity to warn motorists that taking to the roads at night can involve a higher likelihood of collisions.

Restricted vision that comes with night time can cause longer reaction times and harder-to-judge distances, said chief executive David Williams.

"Smart drivers will adjust their driving to deal with restrictions placed on their vision rather than expecting eyes to achieve tasks they are scientifically not capable of achieving," he added.

Of course, female drivers who are solo behind the wheel at night should always remember to take the right equipment in case of an emergency.

This could include a torch, blanket and some refreshments to keep sugar levels up while you wait for the breakdown team to arrive.
