A "little known" insurance product could provide a handy extra cover dimension for women drivers, a company claims.

Gap insurance, which covers the difference between a car's original value and the insurer's payout in the case of a write-off, is cropping up on the radar of more drivers, Click4Gap.co.uk said.

Guaranteed Asset Protection (Gap) insurance is designed to bridge the gap between a car's original market value, and what the insurer actually pays out should the car be stolen or written off.

This can be used to clear any debts still owed for the car's purchase, or finance the purchase of a replacement car.

Click4Gap.co.uk marketing director Andy Bendell said: "It's not just for brand new cars – you can buy Gap insurance for any car up to seven years old, locking in the value of the car today."

According to Click4Gap.co.uk over 500,000 vehicles are written off each year.

The company was founded in 2003 to sell Gap insurance direct to the consumer via the internet, cutting out dealers and brokers.
