Lone women drivers in one city will soon be able to benefit from their own exclusive extra-secure parking spots.

The Manchester Evening News reports female motorists could feel safer after the scheme is introduced by NCP Manchester.

Upgraded information signs are also being provided and night time parking fees are also to be reviewed.

Quoted by the paper NCP Manchester managing director Mike Pemberton said: "We are in the process of introducing 'lone female' parking spots are working on upgrading electronic displays."

The firm is a double act between NCP and Manchester Council and has developed a parking plan geared to ensure there are only small or no charge increases across its 45 parking areas, with some prices actually falling.

The paper also quoted Mr Pemberton as saying the plan was designed to realign a 'haphazard' parking charge system, with a number of zones introduced.

NCP Manchester was first formed in 1999 to inject private finance into the city's car parks and improve efficiency and security.
