Women drivers in the UK will be able to buy mass-produced versions of fuel cell-powered vehicles thanks to a global partnership.

Nissan and Renault have teamed up to work on environmentally-friendly technology and are just two years away from widely-available green models.

The partnership has already said it is planning to market electric vehicles in Israel and Denmark in 2011.

Now the double act says research is being conducted on models running on fuel cell-powered electric vehicles, with both set to be unveiled this summer.

A statement from both companies read: "Nissan will demonstrate the X-Trail FCV in six European countries while Renault will showcase the Scenic ZEV H2 at its environmental workshop in Barcelona during the second half of June."

Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are capable of producing their own power rather than relying on electricity stored in a battery which needs to be provided by an outside source.

Female drivers looking to take up greener driving habits could be interested in the cars, which would be exempt from the London congestion charge and be in a low road tax band.

No official UK release date has been given, but Nissan has said it will start selling electric vehicles in the US and Japan in 2010.
