Men are drinking far more than women - something which may translate in the number of drink-driving accidents affecting female car insurance policies nationwide.

The Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS) research manager Dr Rachel Seabrook has commented that there is a belief that females are overdoing it, "but it's actually men who are drinking far more".

Dr Seabrook's comments comes as figures from road charity Brake show that four out of ten female drivers admitted to getting behind the wheel after drinking.

But the official did advise motorists how they can avoid a conviction and invalidating their female-friendly car insurance policies.

"Heavy sessions on a Friday or Saturday are worse than steady drinking throughout the week [but] the quality of alcohol matters in the long term," she said.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that 2,943 people were killed on UK roads in 2007.
