Millions of motorists to see tax increases

Millions of female motorists stand to see their road tax bills increase under new plans put forward by the government.

A new system is to be introduced aimed at placing the highest tax burden on the most polluting vehicles.

However, new figures show that drivers of 43 per cent of the UK's cars are expected to have to pay higher road tax bills by 2010.

Just one-fifth will benefit from smaller bills when the proposals come into effect.

According to the Times, Sheila Rainger from the RAC said it was "shocking" that the Treasury had not revealed the true impact of the changes until now.

"Far from being a green tax, this scheme will take £1.2 billion off the motorist and put it in the Treasury’s coffers. The chancellor must think again," she remarked.

Women drivers seeking to reduce their motoring bills may wish to consider purchasing a more environmentally-friendly vehicle.

Visitors to this year's British International Motor Show will have the opportunity to view the latest zero-emission vehicles and pick-up green driving tips at the event's Electric Vehicle Village.
