More 20mph school limits possible 15 May 08
More 20mph speed limits around schools could be on the cards after the government said it was committed to the idea.
Female motorists and mums worried about other drivers' speeds on school runs have previously backed council plans for lower limits.
Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick said local authorities should continue to introduce the limits where they felt they were appropriate.
He said: "The Department for Transport encourages and supports any local authority wishing to introduce 20mph speed limits."
He was responding to comments from Labour MP David Drew, who had asked what action the government was taking to support councils looking at introducing the scheme.
Road safety charity Brake has called for a compulsory 20mph limit around all schools in the UK, in a move likely to be backed by some women drivers.
Schools supported by local authorities in several counties have already introduced school road 20mph limits with parents' support.
