Motorists encouraged to do it themselves
Women drivers prefer garages that have signed the FOXY Promise© to say 'We strive to be a female friendly business and will never knowingly overcharge, patronise or sell our customers services they do not need or want.'
Cash-strapped women drivers looking to save money in the current economic climate may find they can carry out some car repairs themselves, it has been suggested.
According to the publisher Haynes, certain items such as windscreen wipers, brake pads and bulbs can be replaced by anyone who is competent at DIY.
The group added many motorists should be able to carry out car servicing and routine maintenance at home as well.
It also suggested drivers conduct their own DIY MOT pre-test in order to avoid the expense of failure and a retest.
Women motorists may then be well-advised to search for a female-friendly garage to conduct the real assessment.
Haynes pointed out it produces manuals for more than 500 vehicles for drivers keen to start carrying out their own car maintenance.
Last month, the publisher urged motorists not to neglect their tyres.
It warned incorrectly-inflated tyres have less grip, are more likely to puncture and can increase fuel consumption.
