Motorists 'reducing insurance cover'
Women drivers who are struggling to cover the cost of their car insurance at the moment may not be alone, new research has suggested.
A study by uSwitch found one million motorists in the UK now opt for third party cover rather than a comprehensive policy.
Of these, six per cent revealed they have recently downgraded in a bid to reduce their outgoings.
In total, 20 per cent of those questioned said they could not afford comprehensive cover and three per cent said they only ever look at third party policies because they know they will not be able to meet the costs of insurance that offers higher levels of protection.
Mark Monteiro from uSwitch said motorists must make sure their decision to downgrade is not a false economy.
He acknowledged third party policies may be suitable for owners of low cost vehicles, but added "motorists need to assess the risk of funding a replacement car against the value of the saving to be made".
Ladies looking to reduce outgoings may find specialist insurance for women drivers can be cheaper than standard policies - as female auto owners are generally regarded as posing a lower risk than their male counterparts.
