Half of all newlyweds claim they experienced financial problems during the first 18 months of their marriage which put pressure on their relationship, according to AA Personal Loans.

Research by the group found that large purchases for the marital home were often behind the financial strain felt by female shoppers.

Domestic appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines were found to be one of the first significant purchases couples make, with 40 per cent of newlyweds buying equipment for their kitchen within the first 18 months of married life.

Terry Prendergast, chief executive of Marriage Care, said: "The cost of weddings, honeymoons and stocking the new house all bear a cost and for many the reality of this spending is sometimes lost in the ecstasy of romance."

Elsewhere, a survey by Fool.co.uk has revealed women are more prepared than men to risk buying a house in the current economic climate.
