Old bangers 'could boost your bank balance'

Cash-strapped women drivers could make money out of their old bangers, if the comments of one group are anything to go by.

Used car price expert Glass's claimed people taking part in the government's scrappage scheme may end up making a profit.

It stated motorists could trade in their old vehicle and receive a significant discount off a brand new model.

People who then sell that car on might end up making some money, the group explained.

Managing director Adrian Rushmore said: "The potential profit is greatest for those cars where the nearly-new value is currently high in relation to the list prices – notably small, affordable cars with low running costs."

Drivers were advised if they purchase a Ford Fiesta, Citroen C1 or Fiat 500 through the programme and then sell to a private buyer, they could end up £1,100 better off.

Glass's explained this is because there is high demand for used cars at the moment, but low availability.

The organisation previously predicted prices for second-hand motors would finish the year 16 per cent ahead of values at the end of 2008.
