FOXY Archive On the scrap heap at 18 years old
Environmentally-aware women drivers may be interested to hear the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Foundation is calling for a scheme to be introduced encouraging motorists to scrap cars over a certain age.
According to the group, such an initiative would increase the rate at which road users switched to fuel-efficient new cars thereby helping the country to reduce its carbon footprint.
The organisation said the ideal age for vehicles to be scrapped would be around 18 years old as this would remove most of the last non-catalytic models.
However, director of the RAC Foundation Stephen Glaister said more work would be needed before the initiative could be introduced.
"Any scrappage scheme should be further researched before implementation in order to benefit the environment, motorists and manufacturers," he stated.
He added other countries had launched similar projects and lessons could be learnt by looking at those initiatives.
In other news, the RAC Foundation has claimed helping people to stay behind the wheel into old age was an important way to maintain the well-being of retirees.
