Parents 'should buy their kids the newest car they can afford'

By choosing a garage or dealership that has signed the female friendly FOXY Promise© women drivers can avoid being patronised, overcharged or mis-sold services at MOT, car servicing or vehicle repair times.

Female motorists with grown up children learning to drive may be well-advised to buy their sons or daughters the newest set of wheels they can afford, it has been suggested.

Research by Norwich Union has revealed novice drivers are putting their lives at risk by purchasing cheap vehicles and not getting basic safety car checks carried out.

The study found 52 per cent of motorists under the age of 21 spend less than £500 on their first motor and 40 per cent do not carry out any tests until the MOT is due.

Nigel Bartram from Norwich Union said: "Parents can do very little to control how our children will drive when we are not with them so we have to focus on the things to help make a difference."

He suggested mums and dads buy the newest vehicle they can afford for their kids, preferably with airbags, side protection, ABS and stability control.

Mr Bartram added parents should also encourage their children to undertake regular car servicing.

Earlier this year, Norwich Union warned that company bosses were invalidating their business car insurance by putting their sons and daughters on their policies when they do not work for the firm.
