Quality tyres could save motorists money in the long-run

Women drivers who prioritise safety may be inspired to take a little more care over choosing tyres after hearing the results of recent research.

Autocar magazine tested fived budget imported brands against a premium product from Continental's range.

The cheaper tyres made by Nankang, Linglong, GT Radial, Triangle and Wanli were found to fall short in a number of areas.

In fact, the Continentals performed better in all but one test.

The areas assessed included handling in wet and dry conditions, braking, aquaplaning and driving at speed.

In terms of stopping distances, when the test car was fitted with Linglong tyres it was still travelling at over 27 mph at the same point it had come to a standstill when equipped with Continentals.

Jamie Corstorphine from Autocar commented: "Having seen how the five cut-price tyres in this test perform, we're in no doubt that quality pays dividends."

Female motorists who pay a little extra for tyres may find they save money in the long-run if doing so helps them avoid accidents.

This is because ladies who do not make any claims for a few years could gain access to the best deals on specialist insurance for women drivers.
