More is being done than ever before to clamp down on people who get behind the wheel without car insurance, the Association of British Insurers has claimed.

Spokesperson Malcolm Tarling said the police are making widespread use of automatic number plate recognition technology which means they can identify whether a person has cover within minutes of stopping them.

He added they no longer give motorists seven days to produce an insurance certificate, they just check a computer screen while at the roadside.

Mr Tarling explained a database which records details of all motorists with cover was set up by insurers several years ago.

He stated: "Combining that with automatic number plate technology - the same technology you use to trap speeding motorists - more and more uninsured drivers are being trapped."

Statistics from the Motor Insurers' Bureau have revealed people who drive without cover add £30 to every honest motorist's annual premium.

Female motorists may find they can get a better deal by opting for insurance aimed specifically at women drivers.

As they are sometimes viewed as a safer option by insurers, they may find they qualify for cheaper premiums.
