Scrappage scheme 'gets off to flying start'
Female motorists keen to trade in their old banger under the scrappage scheme are not alone, if new figures are anything to go by.
Statistics released by the government revealed of every five new cars ordered since the initiative was introduced, one was bought as part of the project.
In total, 35,000 vehicles have been purchased under the programme.
Motorists considering taking part have been urged to be quick, as the £2,000 financial incentives are based on a first-come first-served basis and the £300 million set aside will not last forever.
Business secretary Lord Mandelson commented: "The scrappage scheme has got off to a flying start."
He added: "It has given car sales a major boost and offers consumers a great deal."
In other news, the Department for Transport launched a campaign highlighting the dangers of texting while at the wheel earlier this month, after research showed 30 per cent of young people have sent a message while driving.
