Sell your car to drive down motoring costs
The best way for female drivers to push down the cost of motoring is to ditch their car, according to a leading financial advice site.
But people's dependence on their cars may make the move impossible, forcing people to try different cost-cutting techniques.
Writing for Fool.co.uk, Harvey Jones said: "True, if you live in the country where the nearest Tesco is ten miles away then yes, you pretty much need a car."
"But everybody else should give it more than a moment's thought."
Despite a plethora of brokers offering female friendly car insurance the cost of running an average Ford Focus topped £4,678 a year.
According to fool.co.uk, dumping a car that costs more than £6,000 a year to run could save female drivers more than £125 a week.
Mr Jones recommends renouncing car ownership and signing up to a car club, or simply renting a vehicle when you need one.
But Foxy founder Steph Savill doubted the practicality of this motoring advice for many women. "Imagine using public transport with an elderly relative in tow or searching out an unknown car to hire with multiple children, buggies, school times and after clubs to accommodate.
"Then there's the issue of travelling alone to go out at night, and the fact that many women work part time and find it difficult to car share with others who work different hours."
A good alternative to getting rid of an essential motor vehicle is to buy a greener car.
One in three drivers are planning to buy a more fuel efficient model and more than one in six are thinking of downsizing, according to Fool.co.uk.
Worryingly the RAC Foundation has said the government plans to raise a further £2 billion from British motorists by 2011.
