Simple checks 'could help drivers avoid costly car repairs'

Male and female motorists keen to avoid expensive car repairs may be well advised to check their oil on a regular basis, it has been suggested.

Vehicle care specialist Comma warned failing to look under the bonnet to check the level of this vital fluid can result in mechanical failure.

The company went on to point out that the average bill for engine repairs in the UK stands at £1,413.

Comma issued this advice after conducting research which found 17 per cent of drivers have never carried out this type of car maintenance.

The study also revealed one in 20 motorists were unsure how to use a dipstick to ascertain whether oil needs topping up.

Commenting on the findings, Comma's sales and marketing director Mike Bewsey said: "When we're all watching the pennies, it's daft that we don't take better care of one of the most expensive items we own."

A previous survey by the firm revealed three-quarters of drivers mistakenly believe they are okay to delay topping up their oil until the warning light on their car's dashboard comes on.
