Survey: Men leave more valuables in cars than women
If you pride yourself on being a responsible and reliable female driver, then you might be pleased to hear that women are better when it comes to not leaving valuables in their vehicles.
According to a new survey, the value of goods left in unattended cars by men averages £380 - a figure "generally much higher" than safety-conscious women, said LV=, which carried out the research.
The top item stolen by opportunistic thieves from vehicles was found to be removable car radios and stereos, followed by CDs, money and purses, spare clothes and satnavs - items which can often be expensive.
It was also found that one-quarter of car owners in the UK said they had been the victim of car crime, so LV= recommended drivers should be extra-careful.
"We'd advise people not to leave any visible valuables in their car in the first place, as this will massively reduce the likelihood of any break-in," said company spokesperson Emma Holyer.
"The fact is that most car break-ins are by opportunist thieves who would probably not bother to break into the car if it looked as though it didn't contain anything to steal."
If you are unsure about your car's security system or alarm, it might be a good idea to get it all checked out or upgraded before the Christmas period, when shopping for presents can instantly increase the value of goods stored in a boot or backseat.
