Tailgaters 'problematic' for drivers

Tailgating is problematic on all types of road and has been voted the most annoying trait of other drivers.

In a survey conducted by the AA and Populus on behalf of the AA/Autocar Drive Better Campaign, 36 per cent of 14,500 respondents said this action was top in terms of irritating motoring.

President of the AA Edmund King commented while some people behind the wheel tailgate in order to "bully" other cars out of the way, others just do it without thinking.

Either way, it is dangerous for male and female drivers.

"Human error aside, tailgaters fall just behind 'loss of control' as the major cause of crashes," he explained.

"It's a problem not only on motorways but also on dual carriageways, country lanes and in road works," Mr King added.

The statements come as Autocar and the AA have collaborated to launch the Drive Better campaign, which will include both organisations urging the government to rethink the current motoring test.

At the moment, would-be licence-holders have to pass the practical and theory tests, as well as a hazard perception exam.
