Too many harmful car materials "still ending up in landfill" 01 May 08
Cars that once belonged to foxy lady drivers could be reaching landfill with harmful liquids and tyres intact, say green vehicle campaigners.
Clean Green Cars says more than a million scrap cars a year could be ending up in dumps with their pollutants still on board.
The group says 900,000 Certificates of Destruction (CoDs) and notices of destruction (NoDs) were issued in 2006 despite two million cars being taken off the road according to trade and DVLA stats.
Clean Green Cars representative Jay Nagley said: "This is a serious problem. The rules were set up to ensure car makers worked with the recycling industry."
CoDs and NoDs are part of a system designed to ensure a higher percentage of cars are dismantled and their parts recycled rather than dumped outright.
The government introduced the legislation to reduce the amount of harmful materials ending up in landfill and to cut down on the number of cars being dumped illegally.
Clean Green Cars aims to provide drivers including women motorists information to help them choose and use cars in a more environmentally-friendly way.
