Women drivers could still get decent levels of cover when trying to save money by switching to a cheaper policy, executives say.

Bosses at Moneysupermarket.com said good benefits were still available on budget policies due to increased competition between insurers.

The site's head of research Peter Gerrard said companies were having to be more "reactive" because providers can no longer get away with high charges simply because they are well known brand names.

Mr Gerrard said: "What might be a really cheap policy may still offer some really good benefits. It is a case of looking around, looking at what is excluded and at what you need."

Some women could be looking for cheaper motor insurance for female drivers as they look to reduce driving costs amid rising fuel prices.

However, The AA British Insurance Premium Index for the first quarter of 2008 reveals premium hikes widely predicted for car insurance are not being realised.

The average annual premium quoted for comprehensive car insurance is now at £682, £3 less than the end of 2007, but £37 more than this time last year.
