Young female drivers do not cope as well at busy junctions as their male counterparts, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Research by the group found 46 per cent of recently-qualified women struggle to deal effectively with intersections in large towns and cities, compared with 43 per cent of men.

The most common place for a young driver in an urban environment to have an accident is where two roads meet.

Kevin Delaney, head of road safety at IAM, said: "The majority of young drivers have the right attitude to driving but aren't fully prepared for dealing with more complicated junctions."

In order to keep relatively inexperienced motorists safe, parents are being asked to encourage teenagers to take an advanced driver training programme and accompany them in the car both before and after they have passed their test to give them experience on a variety of roads.

Meanwhile, IAM has been urging people to take extra care behind the wheel as winter approaches and conditions become more treacherous.
