Gender stereotypes that have not always been considered female friendly are alive and kicking, according to research by Yorkshire Building Society.

A survey by the organisation has revealed generally men are relied upon as the main breadwinner, while women are expected to carry out domestic chores.

Some 44 per cent of men named the ability to look after the home as one of the attributes they most valued in their partner.

A further 39 per cent valued their partner's cooking skills and another 33 per cent said they appreciated the fact their partner did the cleaning.

Meanwhile, 41 per cent of women wanted a man who was a good listener, 38 per cent were looking for financial stability and 27 per cent wanted someone who would make a good dad.

Tanya Jackson from Yorkshire Building Society said there were certain attributes you could not put a price on "such as being a great mum or dad and being a good listener".
