FOXY Newsdesk Women drivers advised to be on guard
Women drivers are being warned to stay alert before parting with cash for a new car.
Vehicle data firm HPI said motorists shelling out over £3,000 should only pay by banker's draft or cheque - never cash.
This simple payment process can "outsmart" criminals selling cloned autos as most will walk away from a transaction where notes are not involved, the company said.
Banker's drafts and cheques are traceable and this puts crooks off.
Director of HPI Nick Lindsay also said people should always buy from the registered keeper's address.
"Despite giving this advice, we still hear of unsuspecting members of the public buying cloned cars and suffering significant losses when the vehicles are then found to be stolen," he remarked.
The comments follow recent criminal activity in Scotland, where organised swindlers conned six drivers out of thousands of pounds.
A similar scheme was recently discovered in the north-west, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Six people in Stockport were charged with offences involving cloning and selling-on of cars.
