Women drivers 'lack "boy racer" mentality'
11 April 08

Female drivers tend to have lower insurance premiums than their male counterparts because they do not possess the same "boy racer" mentality, it has been claimed.

According to a spokeswoman for Confused.com, male insurance premiums do decrease with age, but they always remain above the costs that women pay because they are more likely to commit a motoring offence.

"Men's insurance, especially when they first pass their driving tests, has historically always been higher than that of their female counterparts - a fact which highlights the 'boy racer' mentality which still exists in Britain," commented the website's managing director Debra Williams.

She added that it is not surprising that males have higher insurance costs as they are two and a half times more likely than women drivers to be convicted of a driving offence.

Last month, findings by the website highlighted that fewer than one million women drivers were penalised for breaking the law last year, compared with 2.3 million men.
