Young women drivers are paying around £861 less than their male counterparts, according to a survey.

Research released by moneysupermarket.com shows there is a "battle of the sexes" currently occuring in the car insurance sector.

Figures from the company show 18-year-old women generally pay £861 less than men of the same age, while female drivers in their 20s have premiums about 16 per cent smaller than men in their 20s.

The firm said young and newly-qualified drivers were seen as "high risk" by the insurance industry.

Head of insurance research Peter Gerrard said: "It's also clear that insurers view women as far more mature motorists at an earlier age."

Statistics also show men start to reverse the trend when they reach middle age, with the average premium for a man in his 50s £4 cheaper than for a woman of the same age.
