39% of women 'dream of starting their own business'
07 March 08

More than a third of women would like to set up their own business, according to the latest research from Abbey.

According to the results of a survey published by the bank, despite the fact that 39 per cent of women would like to begin their own enterprise and be their own boss, just three per cent of men and women who share this dream are doing something about it.

"Many people dream of being their own boss, yet more than one in five doubt themselves before they even begin," said Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey Business Banking.

Mr Wilson added that while "lack of money and knowledge" is a fair excuse, there are people available to help new businesses get started and supply support in those areas.

More than one in ten women with dreams of starting their own firm would choose the internet and technology sector as their preferred industry, the research showed, yet with 23 per cent, retail was the top choice for aspiring female entrepreneurs.

Recent research from the Neeley School of Business and the Cranfield School of Management suggested that women can sometimes bring a more varied experience to the boardroom than their male counterparts.

FOXY Lady Drivers Club would like to see more women enter the male-dominated UK motor industry because motoring services can be much more female-friendly.ADNFCR-1433-ID-18500866-ADNFCR
